Some rooms in a home never feel right. A bonus room runs cold. An upstairs bedroom gets stuffy. A ductless mini split fixes that by heating and cooling one space at a time. Taylor installs and repairs ductless systems in homes across Tacoma and Pierce County. Ductless comfort is one part of our full line of heating services.
How a Ductless Mini Split Works
A mini split is a heat pump that does not need ducts. An outdoor unit connects to one or more indoor units. A thin refrigerant line and a wire run between them through a small hole in the wall. In winter, the system pulls heat from outdoor air and moves it inside. In summer, it reverses and moves heat out. Each indoor unit has its own controls, so every room can stay at its own setting. Where Ductless Fits in Tacoma Homes
Mini splits work well in spaces that a central system misses. These are the most common fits.
- Homes without ductwork: Houses heated by baseboard or wall heaters can add efficient heating and cooling.
- Additions and bonus rooms: New spaces often sit at the end of a duct run or have none at all.
- Finished basements and garages: A mini split turns these spaces into rooms you want to use.
- Upstairs rooms: A single indoor unit can even out a floor that runs warmer or colder.
- Older mini splits: Worn systems can be swapped for newer, quieter models.
Ductless Heating Service for Tacoma Homes
Already own a mini split? We repair the problems that keep it from heating your home well.
Weak or No Heat
A dirty filter, low refrigerant, or a failing part can cut heat output. We test the system and find the cause.
Ice on the Outdoor Unit
Some frost in cold weather is normal. The system melts it during a defrost cycle. Thick ice that stays for hours points to a defrost or airflow problem.
Water Dripping from the Indoor Unit
A clogged drain line can send water down the wall. We clear the line and check the drain pan.
Blinking Lights and Error Codes
Mini splits use codes to flag problems. We read the code and test the part behind it.
Musty Smells and Strange Noises
Dust and moisture can build up inside the indoor unit. That can cause odors. Rattles or buzzing often point to a loose or worn part. We clean, tighten, or replace what needs it.

Mini Split or Central Heat Pump?
Both systems use the same heat pump technology. The difference is how air reaches your rooms. A mini split works best for homes without ducts or for a few problem rooms. A central heat pump makes sense when your home already has good ductwork. Some homes use both. Our heat pump installation in Tacoma page covers ducted systems in more detail.
Keeping a Mini Split Running Well
A few simple steps keep a ductless system working its best.
- Rinse or vacuum the indoor unit filters every month or two.
- Keep leaves, branches, and snow away from the outdoor unit.
- Keep furniture and curtains from blocking the indoor units.
- Book a yearly tune-up with our heat pump maintenance team, which also covers ductless systems.
